Digital Art and Its Role in Sustainability: How to Raise Awareness Through Our Installations

  • Discover how Onionlab’s digital art and immersive installations promote sustainability and raise environmental awareness.

In the age of technology, digital art has taken on an increasingly relevant role in sustainability. More and more studios are focusing on creating pieces that are not only visually impactful but also aim to raise awareness of key environmental issues.

In this article, we explore how the relationship between new technologies, art, and sustainability is shaping the world today, and how Onionlab has contributed and continues to work toward improving our environment.

Sustainability is one of the most urgent issues of our time, and digital art offers an innovative way to communicate key messages on this topic to global audiences.

Onionlab has been working on sustainable projects for years and has been a leader in using digital technologies to create unique experiences that also raise awareness. These projects not only aim to impress audiences but also inspire them to take action to preserve the environment.

At Onionlab, we have adopted a series of solutions to reduce our carbon footprint. We gathered data and roughly calculated our CO₂ emissions in the areas we suspected generated the most pollution. It turned out that catering, travel, and electricity were the most polluting areas.

By adopting a vegetarian diet in our midday catering, our team managed to reduce CO₂ emissions by 35%. In total, we have saved 4 tons of CO₂ per year.

By switching to an electricity company that uses green energy from renewable sources, we have saved 99.8% of CO₂ emissions.

For trips of less than 24 hours, we established the rule of traveling by electric car or train instead of by plane. Also, when commuting to the office, 80% of our team members prefer to travel by bicycle, electric scooter, or public transport.

The Spanish Pavilion

The Spanish Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai is an example of sustainability and creativity at the intersection of design, technology, and art. Onionlab created a unique immersive experience that promotes collective intelligence.

The main attraction is the Forest of Intelligence, an artificial forest 3D-printed to produce oxygen, and an interactive digital tree that responds to the sustainable behaviors of the audience. This project demonstrates Onionlab’s commitment to sustainability and its ability to create innovative solutions that promote environmental awareness.

Agorythm

Through the immersive light and sound installation Agorythm, we raised awareness about sustainability by using real-time data from the cities where it was performed. Data related to air quality, energy, noise pollution, and mobility are used to display the behavior of the city as a poetic journey in a kinetic parametric sculpture.

Climate

A mapping project, also adapted into an immersive piece, that explores two parallel futures: one where the planet is free of global warming, and another where devastation is evident.

Through a visual narrative, we depict a utopia filled with light and vibrant colors, and a dystopia dominated by adverse climatic elements. With this project, we aim to raise awareness of the importance of taking action to protect our planet.

Phasing Rain

Phasing Rain is an immersive installation designed to raise awareness of global warming. Through 26 LED columns and speakers, visitors can experience the visual and acoustic synesthesia of each individual raindrop note, leading to an immersive and emotional experience.

This installation invites reflection on the importance of preserving our planet and taking steps to mitigate climate change.

In summary, digital art is having a significant impact on sustainability, and Onionlab is at the forefront of this trend. Through its work, the studio has shown that digital, immersive, and interactive art can be more than just entertainment—it can also be a powerful tool for raising awareness and promoting meaningful change in the world.
