  • Museums hold the power to captivate and educate audiences through immersive experiences that blend art, technology, and storytelling.

At Onionlab, our dedication to pushing the boundaries of audiovisual (AV) design has led us to collaborate with prestigious museums and exhibitions around the world, revolutionizing the visitor experience.

In this article, we will explore how Onionlab’s innovative AV solutions have transformed museums into dynamic spaces of discovery and engagement, focusing on notable projects such as the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020, Expo Yeosu 2012, our media sculptural piece Crossroads, the installation for Venice Biennale Towards Biology, and Phasing Rain for Es Baluard Museum.

SPAIN PAVILION AT EXPO DUBAI 2020: A JOURNEY THROUGH INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY

The Spain Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 stands as a testament to Spain’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural heritage. Onionlab had the privilege of collaborating on this groundbreaking project, where we seamlessly integrated AV elements to enhance the visitor experience. Through projection mapping on 3D models, interactive displays, and holograms, we transformed the pavilion into a captivating space that showcased Spain’s technological advancements, cultural richness, and commitment to a sustainable future.

The interactive forest itself was a testament to our dedication to pushing the boundaries of AV design. Inspired by natural elements, the forest featured an interactive floor that responded to visitors’ movements, creating an immersive and dynamic environment.

One of the remarkable attractions at the expo was a dedicated floor that showcased an interactive forest, an enthralling space created to raise awareness about sustainability and cultivate environmental consciousness. Serving as the focal point within this immersive forest was an extraordinary installation known as “The Tree of Balance,” offering visitors a captivating and reflective experience.

Visitors were encouraged to answer a series of questions related to sustainability, reflecting on their individual impact on the environment. The installation then evaluated their responses and provided an insightful judgment, reflecting their level of conscience and responsibility towards the planet. This interactive component sparked meaningful conversations and encouraged visitors to reflect upon their choices, fostering a sense of personal accountability for the environment.

CROSSROADS: MERGING ART AND TECHNOLOGY IN A MEDIA SCULPTURAL MASTERPIECE

Crossroads stands as a testament to the power of merging art and technology. This media sculptural piece combines architectural elements with captivating visual displays to create a mesmerizing installation. Through projection mapping and synchronized audiovisual elements, Crossroads transcends traditional sculpture, inviting viewers into a dynamic world where light and form converge.

In collaboration with KDJT, it was featured in the UAE Pavilion offering a profound exploration of the nation’s heritage, current achievements, and future aspirations. This captivating installation served as a symbolic representation of the UAE’s cultural and historical significance as a hub of trade and exchange. By highlighting the pivotal role of trade in shaping civilizations, Crossroads went beyond the concept of commerce as a means of sustenance, emphasizing its broader impact on knowledge, language, and culture.

The trails on the sand and the illuminated objects dynamically showcased the convergence of diverse cultures, the exchange of ideas, and the transformative power of trade throughout history.

VENICE BIENNALE: TOWARDS BIOLOGY, EXPLORING THE VALUES OF LA FABRICA

Experience the captivating installation, “Towards Biology” and embark on an immersive adventure that invites visitors to delve into the thought-provoking exploration of the values embodied by La Fábrica. As a renowned creative hub and the birthplace of the Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, it has shaped a distinct approach from the mid-1970s to the present. This engaging experience pays homage to the foundational principles and innovative techniques that define the workshop’s unique identity. Discover the intricate interconnections between ecology, society, and technology, and gain a deeper understanding of their profound influence.

Through this immersive installation Onionlab seeks to provide a conceptual journey that delves into the core ethos of La Fábrica, a space that has fostered a progressive and forward-thinking mindset within the architectural realm. This installation invites visitors to contemplate the harmonious integration of nature, human society, and technological advancements as essential aspects of sustainable and impactful architectural design.

EXPO YEOSU 2012: EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF THE OCEAN

Onionlab’s collaboration with Expo Yeosu 2012 brought the mysteries of the ocean to life. Through our innovative AV solutions, we designed captivating exhibits that immersed visitors in a multisensory journey. From projection-mapped environments that simulated underwater habitats to interactive installations that allowed visitors to explore marine biodiversity, our aim was to create an awe-inspiring experience that fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of our oceans.

One of the standout installations was Dimaxion, an awe-inspiring projection mapping experience that took visitors on a captivating journey following the path of the Spanish expedition Malaspina II.

With great attention to detail and the application of advanced projection techniques, we creatively transformed a world map into a dynamic and visually captivating display. Visitors had the chance to witness the awe-inspiring voyage of the Malaspina II expedition as it diligently collected water samples and conducted research on ocean currents spanning the globe.

Deep Ocean showcases the captivating world of marine life, residing at an impressive depth of approximately 5,000 meters, where peculiar and bioluminescent creatures thrive. Featuring an expansive 8-meter screen, immersive 5.1 surround sound, innovative mapping techniques on bottles, and dynamic LED lighting that responds to sound, this installation has garnered tremendous admiration at the Spanish Pavilion. Visitors are not only treated to a visually stunning experience but also have the opportunity to interact with some of the enchanting characters within the installation.

PHASING RAIN:REFLECTION ON MEMORY, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND WATER SCARCITY

Most of Onionlab’s installations have the remarkable ability to adapt to various occasions within museum settings, such as anniversaries. This is exemplified by the transformative experience created for Es Baluard’s 16th anniversary celebration.

Es Baluard commemorated its 16th anniversary with the thought-provoking installation “Phasing Rain” which pays tribute to the historical significance of the venue while addressing pressing contemporary issues like climate change and water scarcity. Through a captivating blend of light and sound, the museum invited visitors to contemplate these topical concerns. Co-directed by Onionlab and Xavi Bové Studio, with mesmerizing sound design and music by Zinkman, the installation took on a transformative role within the old freshwater cistern, once vital for the Puig de Sant Pere neighborhood and now a part of the Es Baluard Cultural Complex. This immersive experience creates a powerful dialogue between the past and present, with the drops of water resonating with our collective conscience. As visitors explored the space, they could engage with the interplay of light and music at their own pace, enhancing their personal connection to the installation.

Onionlab’s commitment to transforming the museum experience through innovative AV solutions has resulted in remarkable collaborations and groundbreaking projects. From the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 to Expo Yeosu 2012, Crossroads, and the Venice Biennale installation Towards Biology, we have consistently pushed the boundaries of art, technology, and storytelling. By seamlessly integrating projection mapping, interactive displays, immersive audio, and synchronized visuals, we have created awe-inspiring environments that engage, educate, and inspire visitors.
