La Jove Aïda
The piece reimagines Verdi’s Aïda through a contemporary lens, with the aim of bringing classical opera closer to younger audiences by using a modern visual and narrative language.By translating the emotional depth of the original work into a more accessible aesthetic, the project creates a bridge between generations, making opera resonate within today’s cultural context.
At Onionlab, we were responsible for shaping the visual universe of La Jove Aïda, reimagine the world of Egypt in Aïda from a contemporary perspective, while paying tribute to the historical scenographic work of Josep Mestres Cabanes.
The stage design is built around rear-projected visuals that play with depth and spatial perception, creating environments with strong presence and dimensionality. These visual layers generate a sense of immersion, transforming the stage into a dynamic and evolving landscape that accompanies the narrative in real time.
The visual language of the project is built on two contrasting color palettes, where warm, vibrant tones immerse Aina in the virtual world, while cooler hues anchor the story in the real world. This chromatic duality reinforces the narrative structure and helps the audience intuitively navigate between both dimensions.
These spaces are enhanced by animated LED bars, synchronized with the live music, intensifying emotions and immersing the audience in the world of the performance. he lighting design becomes a narrative tool in itself, reacting to rhythm, tension and dramatic shifts throughout the piece
For the characters inhabiting the virtual world, garments were created with integrated lighting, reinforcing the futuristic and technological nature of this universe. These costumes extend the visual language beyond the scenography, allowing the performers themselves to become part of the immersive system.
The integration between scenography, lighting, costume and music creates a cohesive audiovisual ecosystem where all elements are interconnected. This holistic approach allows the narrative to unfold not only through performance, but also through space, light and atmosphere.
La Jove Aïda is a stage experience that merges opera, technology and contemporary visual language, offering a new way to experience a classic through emotion, light and immersion. A project that reflects our approach to art direction: building bridges between tradition and new digital imaginaries
